Track and Field Coach Bios

Head Coach (Hurdles, Sprints Relays): Danny Kung

Coach Kung enters his 6th year with the program and third year as head coach specializing in the hurdles, sprints and relays. Throughout his 14 years of coaching, he has coached numerous CIF-SDS individual champions and state qualifiers as well as winning 2 CIF-SDS Div. II Team Champions at La Jolla High (One with the boys and one with the girls). He has helped Sage Creek build a reputation for great long sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams along with helping lead the boy’s team to their first track & field league championship. He hopes to continue building up the reputation of excellence as a full track and field program in San Diego.



Assistant Coach (Distance): Bob Muschek

Coach Bob Muschek is entering his 1st year with the program as an assistant coach specializing in the distances. He has been coaching for over 20 years at several schools in the San Diego County area and teaches Social Science at Monte Vista high school. He has coached 5 state meet qualifiers in track at Westview high school where he coached until 2015.  He was named boys cross country coach of the year in 2014.  He has coached the last 2 track seasons at Poway high school.  He and his wife have raised 3 children in Scripps Ranch and will be taking over the Head Cross County coaching position in the fall. 

Assistant Coach (Pole Vault): Jason Black

Coach Jason Black enters his 3rd year with the program as an assistant coach specializing in the pole vault.  He has helped revive the pole vault program after having no vaulting program from 2015-2017.  He sent Sage Creek’s first athlete in the pole vault to the CIF-SDS championships last year and we are excited to see the program continue to grow.

Assistant Coach (High Jump): Kassie Betts

Coach Kassie Betts enters her 3rd year as an Assistant coach specializing in the High Jump. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa in Canada where she was a member of the Track & Field team specializing in heptathlon. She went on to compete for Leamington C&AC in England where she won gold in the Midlands Combined Events Championship. She has done a phenomenal in building up the group of high jumpers from last year and will continue to help develop their skills sets.  

Assistant Coach (Throws): Erl Cabanas

Coach Erl Cabanas enters his 2nd year as an assistant throws coach. A former collegiate sprinter, himself, he has coached 3 national champions and several medalist in the javelin, as well as a multiple athletes to the CA state championships.  2019 will mark his 40th year in coaching.
